Messor barbarus  is a harvester ant, both hardy and easy to keep.  They collect seeds and store them in a grainary within their nest..  The larger ants will chew these seeds to make "ant bread" which is the primary food source.  They also feed off Insect protein.  Messor barbarus will not normally feed on honey/sugar water. They should have fresh drinking water that must be supplied in a manner in which protects the ants from drowning.
